SUBLIMATION

6/19/20253 min read

Are you curious about sublimation crafting but don’t know where to start? You’re not alone! Sublimation has exploded in popularity among crafters, small business owners, and DIY enthusiasts for its ability to produce vibrant, professional-quality designs on all kinds of products.

In this beginner-friendly guide, I’ll walk you through what sublimation is, how it works, and what you’ll need to get started. Whether you’re just experimenting or planning to launch your own small business, this post will give you the confidence to dive in!

🌈 What Is Sublimation?

Sublimation is a heat transfer process where a special ink is turned into gas (without becoming liquid first!) and infused directly into a compatible material—usually polyester or polymer-coated items. The result? A permanent, high-quality, full-color design that won’t crack, peel, or fade over time.

Unlike vinyl or iron-on transfers that sit on top of your material, sublimation becomes part of the surface. That’s why it looks so seamless and professional.

🧪 How Does Sublimation Work?

Here's the quick breakdown:

  1. Design your image on a computer using graphic software (like Canva, Silhouette Studio, or Adobe Illustrator).

  2. Print the design using sublimation ink and a compatible printer onto sublimation paper.

  3. Transfer the design using a heat press (at high temperatures—typically around 400°F) onto a sublimation-friendly blank.

  4. The heat turns the ink into gas, and it bonds with the surface. Once cooled, you’re left with a bold, durable design.

🧰 What You Need to Get Started with Sublimation

Getting into sublimation does require some specific tools and materials. Here’s a starter list of everything you’ll need:

1. Sublimation Printer

You’ll need a printer that either comes ready for sublimation (like the Sawgrass SG500) or one that can be converted (many crafters use the Epson EcoTank 2800 series). Regular printers using pigment or dye inks won't work. Please read my blog named "The Best Sublimation Printers for Home Crafters in 2025" for a comparison of printers.

🔍 Tip: If you convert a regular printer, you can only ever use sublimation ink in it from then on.

2. Sublimation Ink

Not just any ink will do—this special ink is designed to sublimate under high heat. Brands like Hiipoo, Welacer Ink, or Sawgrass offer great beginner-friendly options.

3. Sublimation Paper

This paper holds the ink before it’s transferred. Make sure to buy paper that matches your printer and ink for the best results.

4. Heat Press

A heat press machine is essential for applying the design. A Cricut EasyPress can work for flat items like shirts, but a full clamshell or swing-away press offers more versatility and even pressure.

🔥 You’ll need consistent heat around 385–400°F and firm pressure.

5. Sublimation Blanks

Not all surfaces will work! You’ll need blanks that are either polyester-based (like shirts with at least 65% polyester) or specially coated for sublimation (like mugs, magnets, keychains, coasters, and tumblers).

🧼 Tip: White or light-colored blanks work best—sublimation doesn’t print white ink.

6. Design Software

You’ll need to create or upload images to print. Great beginner options include:

7. Heat Tape or Spray

To keep your design in place during pressing, use heat-resistant tape or sublimation spray adhesive.

8. Protective Accessories

🎨 What Can You Make with Sublimation?

The possibilities are endless! Here are a few ideas to spark your creativity:

If it’s light-colored and polyester-coated, you can probably sublimate it!

💡 Final Thoughts: Is Sublimation Right for You?

If you love vivid color, permanent designs, and the ability to customize just about anything—sublimation is worth exploring. It’s an investment up front, but once you’re set up, the creative potential is incredible.

Whether you're crafting for fun, gifts, or profit, sublimation opens the door to a whole new level of DIY magic.
